"taking care" of Murphy

Murphy's law..."if anything can go wrong, it will". That sets the stage for my story.
My dear husband has been traveling on business for the last two weeks, which we have found to be a bit of a budget challenge to begin with. Plus, it's December...that speaks for itself! Holidays, extra child care costs, some Christmas shopping, extra gas...the list goes on. Needless to say, we tried to be as prepared as possible heading into December.
Well...*it's a good thing* we have been building up our savings, because in the two weeks that Brad has been gone, our hot water pipe in the kitchen froze, and also discovered that we had a very unwelcome guest (or two) in our attic. I actually woke up to creepy, loud scratching sounds on my bedroom ceiling. Not really something I could live with until Brad got home. I needed a professional, ASAP!
I found a pest control company recommended by Angies List and called right away--because I didn't have to worry about where the money was going to come from. This is what our savings is for, I thought! Phew! A year ago, it would have added another several hundred dollars to our home equity line of credit, but not this year!
As of today, we've "taken care" of one rodent (RIP, Murphy). There are probably more, so we have several traps set up in the attic and they will be checked next week by the same company as part of their initial service. We've also had the gaps in the roof fixed, the crawl space checked, a loose heating duct tightened up in the crawl space, and frozen pipes are now thawed and re-wrapped. Next comes trimming back the tree branches around the house in order to keep critters off of the roof.
And, all without having to worry about how to pay for it...just the work ahead of replenishing the savings account. I am SO thankful!
